Here's the deal. Last century, the United States was a great country and was a leader in academic strength across the board. By mid-century, commercial televisions were in average American homes. Before this, radio, books and newspapers dominated how people ingested news and entertainment. Naturally, the percentage of book-reading declined and television-watching increased. Literacy rates dropped, but America was still collectively intelligent enough to task itself to land someone on the Moon, and they did it within a decade of JFK's announcement. The Moon Landing was one of the most watched events in human history. The television was no longer an American phenomenon. It spread to third-world countries. People loved it! There was a danger, though. Canadian philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, is famous for saying, "The medium is the message." Books are a medium. Newspapers are a medium. McLuhan labeled them has "hot" because they rely only one of your five senses. With books, you rely on sight to ingest content and your brain's imagination is required to interpret everything else. With radio, you rely on sound. The War of the Worlds was an epic radio broadcast. The populous could "see" the alien invasion in their brains so much that they took to the streets in a wild panic. Television was the new medium in society. It provided sounds and sight. It was tagged as a "cold" medium by McLuhan because it required less imagination from the brain to fill in gaps. What do we mean by "medium" anyway? Well, long before the Internet, there were content creators, but we called them programmers. Television began in commercial form. Somebody created content like "I Love Lucy" for example, and actors had to be paid, studios had to be built, and cameras had to be bought. There were entire economies in Hollywood and New York built around these things. An author had a fabulous idea and she wanted to share it with the World. She used a book as a medium. A medium is the vessel to communicate. A vinyl record is a medium. A painting is a medium. Even a love letter is a medium. A word is a medium. Language itself is a medium. As humans, we rely on symbols to communicate. Each form needs a medium. When Orson Welles created a fake news event in 1938 warning that Martians had invaded New Jersey, he used radio as a medium to cause the mass hysteria of The War of the Worlds. John F Kennedy was an avid reader, he could speed read 1200 words per minute, and it was legendary that he would read in the bathtub, during meals, and while being driven in cars. Literacy coincides with intelligence. JFK was able to deliver on his promise to get America to the Moon by the end of the decade. He set that in motion. So books are a hot medium, newspapers are a hot medium, and television is a cold medium. What are these collectively called? Are these three mediums? No! The plural for medium is media! When you hear psychotics complain about right-wing or left-wing media, you're really hearing a complaint that their political adversaries are even talking to each other! They are complaining about Free Speech itself! Healthy democracy relies on us talking to each other! It relies on us getting our ideas to one another! When people say "media", they're often referring to corporate news either on television, magazines, or with major newspapers like the New York times, but "media" is way more than that. It's our language, our podcasts, our blogs, and even our text messages. Anything we use to communicate is a medium, and all of it together is media. The danger to our World is exhibited in the wars against Venezuela and Iran. This is the prophesy of Idiocracy! In 1962, Thomas Kuhn wrote Structures of Scientific Revolutions. Pope Urban VIII condemned Galileo Galilei in 1633 to lifelong house arrest for publishing works suggesting a Sun-centered universe in contradiction to the traditional Ptolemaic geocentric model. Thomas Kuhn noticed a pattern that great scientists throughout history are not celebrated! Rather, they are condemned on their contemporary societies and it takes generations for their ideas to be accepted into the mainstream. Sir Isaac Newton gave us the three laws of classical physics, but he also dabbled alchemy as he sought the Philosopher's Stone which was a key to immortality. Legend says he founded the Freemason Secret Society because he didn't want to be condemned and scrutinized by the Catholic Church as Galileo had been. Albert Einstein published his ideas of special relativity (E=mc²) in 1905, and 40 years later his ideas were used to explode atomic bombs. He debated Neils Bohr who theorized about electrons in fixed shells in 1913. Bohr helped form the basis for quantum mechanics, and his main belief centered around complementarity. His ideas were proven by Claus Jönsson in 1961 with the Double-Slit Experiment demonstrating that light behaves as a particle sometimes, and behaves as a wave at other times, and it's complicated by the observer effect. The point here is that people used to be literate, and they had ideas which required lots and lots of reading. They published their ideas, and it often took time to embed into the public consciousness. The same year Thomas Kuhn published his book, the Catholic Church convened for Vatican II. Before this, mass was primarily done in Latin. Say what you want about the Catholic Church, their studies used to be rigorous. Parishioners had to learn Latin and a comprehensive catechism. They to learn the seven sacraments, a host of prayers, the seven deadly sins, and the four ordinal virtues. They had to know the difference between sins of commission, and sins of omission, and they had to know the difference between venial and mortal sins. Say what you want about Protestants, they actually studied the Bible! A common Christian in the sixties, seventies, and eighties could cite multiple Bible verses verbatim by memory! They understood the Beatitudes taught by Jesus in the fifth chapter of Mathew! Mercy, meekness, purity, peacemaking, and a thirst for righteousness are encouraged. In these prior decades, you knew a Christian by their behaviors much more than "praying on street corners" like hypocrites. Up until the Vietnam War, Americans proudly sang patriotic songs, and they actually knew what was written in the Constitution! The decline of literacy affected religion and patriotism. It has become a team sport! If you wore a Buccaneers hat in 2022, an Rams hat in 2023, then a Chiefs hat in 2024, it doesn't make you a fan of those NFL teams! It makes you a front-runner, and nobody is going to take you seriously! There are no doubt a handful of people in Cleveland walking around in brand new Seattlle Seahawks hats today! That's the nature of life! People want to be associated with winners! Cleveland is a miserable town for football, but die hards will still wear Browns gear and go to the games! Catholicism doesn't just require showing up to mass on religious holidays. It requires learning the catechism, then going through the ceremonies of First Communion and Confirmation. It requires that believers leave church in peace to "love and serve the Lord". And Protestant Christians should do more than simply read the Bible. Matthew 6:17 says, "By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?" Jesus said to anger in your heart is to commit murder, and to lust in your heart is to commit adultery. And American Patriotism? There is no America without its Constitution, and there is no patriotism without understanding what is written inside. In the course of a couple of generations, we've gone from highly-literate JFK to Donald Trump whose daily briefings had to be dumbed down, and often given in oral form. Tulsi Gabbard even decided to present them in the style of a Fox News segment. This is Idiocracy! Calling yourself a Seahawks fan in Cleveland simply by buying a new jersey and hat will get you laughed at in sports bars! Calling yourself a Christian will get you laughed at on a World stage if you revel in killing of Minnesota protesters and also the killing of hundreds of children in Gaza and Iran! Calling yourself a patriot will get you laughed at outside the Trump Cult if you believe he can defy Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution! In this video, the Senate "failed" to pass a resolution to stop the Trump War on Iran. Guess what, morons? You don't need one! You already have the fucking Constitution of the United States of America! Napoleonic Law is a backwards ass legal system where accused people are guilty until proven innocent. The American system has been the opposite for a couple of hundreds of years! You are innocent until proven guilty! The Republican Congress really should stop using the word "patriot" to describe themselves! Trump can't start a war in Iran because it's in the Constitution that only Congress can do such thing! Voting to stop his illegal actions is like voting to end free speech or gun ownership! You have to amend the Constitution to give the president these powers! But this is Idiocracy! People call themselves Christians, do heinous deeds, then justify it by saying, "It's somewhere in the Bible." So-called patriots are doing the same thing now with Trump's war crimes in Venezuela and Iran. "It's somewhere in the Constitution." These people are truly idiots ... ============ ============ We're already on Leg 4 of the March blog, soon going on Leg 5 ... :tractorbeam:
