If you played the original Aion back in the day, you already know that choosing a faction wasn’t just a cosmetic choice—it defined your entire identity, your home world, and who you'd be fighting for years. Aion 2 keeps that legendary rivalry alive.
The game’s core conflict boils down to two playable factions: the Elyos and the Asmodians. Your choice shapes your character’s looks, your starting region, and how you view the lore. Sitting right in the middle is a third, non-playable faction that wants to destroy you both.
Here is a practical breakdown of the factions in Aion 2 to help you decide where your loyalties lie.
The Playable Factions
1. The Elyos
The Elyos live in the lower half of the fractured world of Atreia, a sun-drenched region known as Elysea. Because their home was blessed with abundant light after the world shattered, they look exactly like what you’d expect from a traditional "light" faction.
  • Visuals: They sport a classic angelic aesthetic, featuring fair skin tones and radiant white wings.
  • Environment: Expect to spend your early days running through bright, vibrant landscapes filled with lush green forests and tropical jungle themes.
  • Lore Vibe: Because of their beautiful surroundings, the Elyos genuinely view themselves as Aion’s chosen people. This gives them a very righteous, slightly arrogant attitude. They see themselves as the true protectors of the world.
2. The Asmodians
On the flip side, we have the Asmodians. They were flung into the dark, upper half of Atreia, a brutal region known as Asmodae. Cut off from the sun, they had to adapt to a freezing, unforgiving environment, and their physical appearance completely changed because of it.
  • Visuals: Asmodians have darker skin tones, black wings, sharp claws on their hands and feet, and a distinct back mane. The coolest part? Their eyes glow a fierce red whenever they enter combat.
  • Environment: Their zones are harsh, rugged, frozen, and arid. It’s a bleak but incredibly atmospheric landscape.
  • Lore Vibe: Don't mistake them for generic "evil" bad guys. The Asmodians look intimidating because they are survivors. Centuries of fighting for every scrap of resources have made them fiercely loyal to one another and defiant against a world that tried to break them.
Gameplay Balance & Restrictions
Choosing a faction is mostly about aesthetic preference and community, as the developers have made sure neither side has a distinct gameplay advantage.
  • No Class Locking: You don’t have to worry about missing out on a specific playstyle. Both factions have full access to all eight core classes: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter.
  • Subtle Skill Variations: While the classes are shared, they aren't exact mirror images. Factions feature subtle variations in how certain skills look, their particle effects, or how chain-skill sequences play out. It adds a nice bit of flavor without breaking the balance.
  • Server Split & Open World PvP: By default, Aion 2 separates the opposing factions onto different servers. However, you will meet your rivals face-to-face during massive cross-realm PvP rifts and chaotic battles in the Abyss.
The Non-Playable Threat: The Balaur
You can't talk about Aion without mentioning the Balaur. They are an ancient, powerful, dragon-like NPC faction that serves as the ultimate antagonist of the game.
The Balaur hate everyone equally. They are intensely hostile to both the Elyos and the Asmodians. Because they represent such a massive threat, they introduce a really cool dynamic to the game: sometimes, you and your bitterest player rivals will be forced into temporary, uneasy PvE collaborations just to survive a Balaur assault before turning your weapons back on each other.
