Hello guys,
Here's a summary of my recent life.  A couple of months ago, I quit my job.  I saved enough money to re-locate and I planned to move to Vegas.  This was in mid-September.  On my way home on my last day at work, I found out my aunt passed away so this delayed plans.  Then, when I was ready to go, the Vegas shooting happened.  That changed everything for me.

I've been living off the savings I had which I planned to use for apartment rent.  I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and when the Dodgers made it to the World Series (first time in 29 years) it kinked things a little more.  I like to write fiction and I've uploaded eBooks to Scribd.com over the years.  During my time off work these past couple of months, I finished Kiribati.  Usually, I write with a paedonym but this time I didn't.  Not sure why.  It's my first book since Thermite from 2013.  I gear my books towards conspiracy theorists, by the way.  These eBooks are available for free at scribd.com/brickjayne .

i'm in a gas station.  there's some issue of me thinking of getting work as a cashier behind bullet-proof plexiglass.  i already bought a.k. perfume & planned to give it to her as a gift.  somehow, i find out that she might buy me cologne for valentine's day.  i see her & we walk outside of the gas station lobby (generic-looking place & no groceries or snacks).  i tell her that i already got her something.  "okay," she says.  i think we peck on the lips.  i tell her it's in the twenty-dollar range.  she walks away & i feel good.  i go back in the gas station lobby & look for the gift i bought (by then, i'm almost sure it cost more like fifty bucks) & i find a bag of my stuff (mostly un-used greeting cards) partially eaten by mice.  the perfume i bought couldn't be found .... .

I'm not so sure this is entirely wu but it's still relevant to the "destiny issue".  Maniac Nebula is a neat site and you can get into some great conversations about conspiracies, extra-terrestrials, and good times.  You can meet neat people and, as Demented & Turquoise have shown, it can hit a comfortable, higher level than simple forum chatting.  On the flip side, things can fall apart even with the best of intentions (no need to single out anyone here).  I took a few months away from Maniac Nebula then started posting again around Memorial Day weekend.  It took me a couple of weeks to get in the groove and enjoy my time here.  I posted "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" in mid June because it's easy to admire people here and develop a crush or two.  The problem, it seems, is controlling yourself.  I've seen a few people flounce and leave during the past few months.  One guy got particularly perturbed when a gal friend left so he posted a thread trying to lure her back in.  Someone scolded the guy for becoming too emotionally involved with cyber people but eventually she came back and everything seemed fine.

The reason I'm writing this has to do with our methods and behaviors.  I'm including "I Can't Tell You Why" because it speaks to the issues that we go through, not just online, but in our real lives.

Being here at the Nebula can feel like being at a non-stop party.  We're always surrounded by people listening in on conversations and most of the time, it's harmless and okay.  It's even a good thing.  I've only received PMs from a handful of people since I signed up on Halloween of last year.  There's a different quality to the conversation.  Using the party analogy, it's like going outside to the backyard to talk about an issue or taking off to fast food with someone.  The feeling becomes quaint and personal.  "We spoke in walls and web" is a lyric from Nirvana's The Man Who Sold the World.  Having people constantly around creates a lot of indirect "wink and nod" kind of communication.  It gets frustrating, though.  There's something else funny, too, as a phenomenon.  Some people have complained that they're "thread killers" and I lived through my share believing that I chased people away.  

There's something else, though.

"Thread killing" isn't only an individual thing.  There's no less than one person on this forum who I refuse to talk to, for the most part... at least directly.  Have you seen this happen before??  A pair of friends start talking to each other and the room clears??  Crickets???  Except for the two people??

There are exceptions to the rule.  I never once posted on the Hot Chocolate Lazy Workers thread before it was locked and Kittenz started a somewhat similar Coffee Shop thread where I posted a few times.  When the thread was merged and became the infamous Al Capone thread, I tried to post there once or twice every couple of weeks out of principal.  There's no way to kill that thread but I told someone in a PM a few weeks ago that it changes when I put something.  No biggie, no biggie... but you can check the record yesterday.  After my post, it trickled to a crawl then no one posted for another half day!!!!!!


My point is not to whine about how things work.  My point is to try to explain myself a little and maybe compare notes.  Does this happen to you??  I'm reminded of Pink Floyd's Nobody Home, "That is how I know when I try to get through on the telephone to you, there'll be nobody home..."  We develop an intuitive sense here and it's often nice to get a pleasant surprise or a incredible curve ball.

I took an environmental art class in the nineties and read Suzi Gablik's The Reenchantment of Art.  The issue of the ego was strongly addressed.  We see these skyscrapers with some insecure guy's name on it or behemoth monstrocities that take space and last forever.  Yes, it's not the easiest thing to control and there's tons of irony but Suzi's message was that we ought to aim for art that is ephemeral, here today and gone tomorrow.  A sand castle, for example.  We have too many competing large egos in the world and that's what destroys everything.

Art is not the only ephemeral thing there is.  Emotions are ephemeral.  "Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind," is a lyric from Fleetwood Mac's Rhannon.  Things fade.  Good emotions turn bad... which is almost okay because we can't ever quit engaging.  There's going to be some misses.  The shame, I believe, is when a good emotion DOESN'T turn bad.  In other words, a good thing can fade and die because one (or both) parties stopped talking to the other.  I've had a few family members that I lost touch with this past year, not because we're bickering, but because we don't make the time for each other like we used to.

For a while, it was a regular thing for me to drink some beers on Friday nights and then get into silly conversations with some of you.  My fridge is full of cold brews but I haven't opened a beer today.  I felt more somber than usual... and maybe a tiny bit more serious, definitely more sober.

** Thread of the Month ***

The thing that got me thinking was this "Don't cheat" thread that was posted.  The internet has people do crazy things.  Lot of emotions.  Heck, a monh or two ago I got drinking and (I think) jokingly asked a girl to marry me!!!!!  I didn't even ask my high school seeetheart to marry me during a few years going together!!!!  Anyhow, that's where I stand right now.  The "walls and web" thing is almost an absolute necessity when people are always around but it's no way to maintain a healthy, functional relationship.  In real life, I know people that speak almost exclusively in entendres and innuendoes.  Maniac Nebula is fun... but sometimes, we make it harder than it has to be!!!!!!
