This time of year, the heads start to roll. The first NFL head coach to get fired in the 2025 season is Brian Callahan from the Tennessee Titans. He was 1 - 5 and playing with a rookie quarterback. A few short years ago, the Titans had Mike Vrabel as head coach, AJ Brown at wide receiver, and Derrick Henry at running back. Some organizations are dysfunctional, and they continually blow good things.
Are the Cowboys dysfunctipnal? Yes, but not as bad. This year's team reminds me of the 1980s Chargers, Dolphins, and Broncos. They had great QBs, explosive offenses, but their defenses were horrible. For the youngsters out there: Did you know there was a period when the NFC won 14 straight Super Bowls? It happened! They say offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships! Also, the NFC committed to the run game. The AFC (with the Raiders) won in 1983 with the great running of Marcus Allen. The AFC didn't win again until 1997 (with the Broncos) with the pounding of RB Terrell Davis. The Broncos won again in the 1998 season, but during the 1980s, they got their asses handed to them three times. The quarterback was the same (John Elway) but they were flinging the ball around without a running game. Same with the Dolphins, Chargers, and even the Bengals.
The point is that the Cowboys are playing like those 1980s AFC teams. They're putting a lot of points on the board, but their defense is flimsy. Their former RB, Rico Dowdle, looked like Earl Campbell yesterday! If you let a team run between the tackles like the Panthers did yesterday, you're not going to win many games. On the flip end, if you can't run between the tackles, you're going to have a lot of three-and-outs. Cowboys have hope, but not a lot. There needs to be more toughness in the middle.
