Will establishing a home office Zero Trust network be overkill?

It is a high-security dev contract I am embarking on and they are suggesting a complete Zero Trust architecture. I have largely been using a good VPN and a good router. How difficult is this to sustain as an individual freelancer, and what would the cybersecurity experts in the community techzeel recommend as a Zero Trust lite?
